Recommended list of books, articles, web sites on the Red Brocket Deer of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize

The Red Brocket deer of Mexico and Central America was known to the Mayan people and the rest of Mesoamerica plus from Panama into Colombia. However the white-tailed deer is the animal most frequently pictured in Late Classic Maya art, painted on vases, bowls, and plates. The red brocket deer is rarely pictured.

It would be nice to have a tabulation from middens of Mayan sites of Peten, Belize, Yucatan Peninsula, Tabasco, Chiapas, and other Mayan areas to see what percent of deer bones are white-tailed deer and what percent of the Mayan diet was the red brocket deer.

And no matter how often the ancient Maya ate the brocket deer, why is it not pictured in art as much as the white-tailed deer? And which is the deer species in most Mayan myths, of Chiapas, Yucatan, Peten. Not only is the white-tailed deer the most frequently pictured as headdress, as being hunted, or in dances, but also there are snake-deer, monkey-deer and other monster-like antler-wearing mythical hybrids (especially on vases from Tepeu 1, Late Classic, Peten, Guatemala).

The word for white-tailed deer is k'ej in Q'eqchi'. The word for male brocket deer is Kaxlan yuk in Q'eqchi. However more research is needed on the word tiuk (Grandia 2004:59).
