When you are in a frontier area of Central America it is nice
to know which hotels are safe, secure, and owned by a pillar of
the local establishment. Julio Godoy (pictured in his hotel below)
has had presidents and royality stay at his hotel. After all,
it is the best hotel in Sayaxche. The streets outside may not
be well paved yet, but the inside of the hotel is clean.
Don Julio and his family built the hotel and have enlarged
it over the decades. I remember it as the original wooden structure.
I stayed here on all my expeditions to the nearby Maya ruins of
Altar de Sacrificios, Aguateca, and Dos Pilas
Sayaxche is also a starting point for longer river trips down
to Yaxchilan and Piedras Negras, since the Rio de la Pasion joins
with other rivers to form the Rio Usumacinta.
